Cessna 182 For Sale

The Cessna 182 Skylane is a four seat, single engine, high wing light aircraft built by Cessna in Wichita, Kansas. First introduced in 1956 as a tricycle gear upgrade to the Cessna 180 Skywagon, it has been in continuous production for over six decades, with more than 23,000 units delivered worldwide.

The 182 is powered by a Lycoming O-540 producing 230 horsepower, giving it a cruise speed of around 145 knots and a useful load approaching 1,100 pounds. With a standard fuel range of approximately 800 nautical miles, the Skylane is well suited to cross country flying and can operate from short grass strips as comfortably as paved runways.

Variants and Evolution

Over its production run, the 182 has evolved through numerous variants. Early models used Continental O-470 engines with 230 hp, while the retractable gear version, designated the Cessna R182 Skylane RG, was produced from 1978 to 1986. Modern production models, restarted in 1997 as the 182S and later the 182T, feature Lycoming IO-540 fuel injected engines and Garmin G1000 glass cockpit avionics.

Why Buy a Cessna 182

The Skylane occupies a practical middle ground in the single engine piston market. It offers more payload and performance than the ubiquitous Cessna 172, while remaining straightforward to fly and maintain. Operating costs are moderate, parts availability is excellent, and the type has strong resale values supported by its reputation for durability. It is a popular choice for owner pilots who need to carry four adults and luggage over meaningful distances.

Buying a Pre Owned Cessna 182

When evaluating a used Cessna 182, key areas to inspect include engine time since major overhaul, corrosion history, and compliance with Cessna service bulletins. Earlier models with the Continental engine are generally less expensive but parts are becoming scarcer. Later models with fuel injection and modern avionics command a premium but offer lower operating costs per hour.
